Your String Cheese Moment

Twenty-three years ago, my husband and I were moving into our first place together. While the living room was piled with boxes, we scoured through the TV channels to search for a distraction to make the unpacking a little more entertaining. We landed on this new show called American Idol. What started as background noise to break up the monotony evolved into a weekly event. We were invested in the contestants and who got eliminated and who stayed.
As years passed, we no longer tuned in, but I recently discovered a clip on YouTube of Hannah Harper, a contestant on the current season. She wrote an original song called “String Cheese.” Its theme centered on motherhood and how, when you’re in the thick of those younger years, your kids’ needs seem endless. You long to escape and be anywhere but being asked to open your child’s string cheese. Her song touched millions and ultimately led to her winning this season.
Her songwriting about longing to not be in the moment you are in made me think about my own life and how often I wished I wasn’t at the game or the carpool pickup or the doctor’s appointment. When I was plagued with chronic fatigue, each day felt overwhelming and I longed for a life different than I had.
I’d like to say I had a positive outlook thinking “this too shall pass” or “what am I learning from this.” But, nope. I was usually filled with dread, sadness, and a deep longing to escape.
While at her breaking point, Hannah decided to write a song – using her gift of music to inspire others and help herself. Finding a small action you can take to help someone else and yourself is often the first step. What do you love to do? How can you share it?
Are you good with words? Send an inspiring text. Do you love to cook? Bake something and give the leftovers to a friend or neighbor. Do you garden? Pick a flower and leave it on someone’s doorstep with a nice note. Do you love music? Play your favorite song and share it with someone letting you know you are thinking of them.
It can be difficult to get out of negative energy spiral as your vibration sinks and attracts lower and lower energies, only perpetuating the problem. So, stopping, doing something uplifting for yourself and sharing it with someone else can be one of the best ways to help yourself shift into a better state.
What can you do while having your string cheese moment?
