How Kids for Kindness Started?
I have two amazing, active boys ages ten and twelve. They love all things sports! I enjoy watching them play, but I wanted their lives to not just be about winning or losing. I wanted them to experience the importance of kindness and compassion. Seven years ago, I was thinking how I could help my three- and five-year old be more grateful for all they had, but also make it fun.
We decided to make sandwiches and cards and ride the trolley (my son’s favorite) to downtown San Diego where we would deliver the sandwiches and then go to the children’s museum nearby. In this way, the kids could experience giving, but also have fun!
We went on our adventure and the boys loved it. Of course, they enjoyed the trolley ride and children’s museum. But, what was most memorable was the good feeling they received from giving to those in need.
My neighbor found out about our giving adventure and asked if she could join us next time. So, with her three kids and my two, we again made sandwiches and took them downtown and delivered them to homeless people on the streets.
More and more families asked if they could join. Thus, Kids for Kindness was created. It was a fun way for children to experience service, but also have fun with their friends. It's like a “play date with a purpose.”
